Struggling with anxiety

Anxiety can be a very disabling experience. It is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe.

It is our body’s natural response when we believe that something unsettling or dangerous could happen.

Everyone has feelings of anxiety at some point in their life. It’s particularly common to experience some anxiety while coping with stressful events or changes, especially if they could have a big impact on your life.

Some people experience the feeling of anxiety most days and can’t necessarily understand why.

Below are some of the ways anxiety can impact us.

Agitated

Because anxiety is a response to fear you may feel a sense of being frozen or panicky. Anxiety can be experienced as thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations.

When we are scared our body releases hormones that cause our heart to beat faster. We become more alert and agitated. For some, anxiety can lead to feeling physically shaky and out of control.

Avoidance

Anxiety is a response to a perceived threat and often causes a desire to escape or hide.

It is not uncommon for people who experience anxiety to avoid meeting up with friends or taking on new challenges such as a job interview or asking someone out.

Powerless

Sometimes the threat we are avoiding is not easy to pinpoint and we can become very frustrated.

Not understanding why you feel the way you do and not feeling able to do something about it can leave you feeling powerless and very lonely.

Stuck

Anxiety can lead to a sense of being stuck, unable to think or act clearly. The world may seem to move forward while you stand still.

Avoiding thoughts, feelings, people and events is likely to erode your self-esteem, confidence and trust in your self and the world.

How we help

Counselling and talking therapy is offered in a confidential and compassionate space. We will walk beside you as you look at how your experience affects you and impacts your daily life.

With your therapist you can spend time understanding the thoughts, beliefs and values that contribute to feeling anxious.

This process helps to regain a sense of control that enables you to manage your anxiety so that you are better able to cope with the inevitable ups and downs of life.

We offer face to face therapy from three London clinics:
